World Ser-ious

After two heart-attack inducing playoff series the San Francisco Giants are now World Series bound. Amazing. Who would have thought that this club, so imperfect early in the season, would now be playing for the 2010 championship? As a lifelong Giants fan I have always said that my one sporting wish would be to see the Giants win the World Series before I expire……just once.

Shiloh Shuffle

Despite having now visited many remote Civil War battlefields such as Glorieta Pass, Champion Hill, and Fort Blakely, I must admit that there was one big glaring hole in my battlefield dance card – I had never been to the Shiloh battlefield in Tennessee. Egads….and you call yourself a Civil Buff?

A Patriot’s Palace

For most people looking to visit a colonial-era mansion in Northern Virginia, George Washington’s Mount Vernon immediately comes to mind. Tens of thousands of visitors each year walk through our first President’s stately home and gardens along the Potomac River. But just down the river from Mr. Washington’s house lies another colonial home, built by another George of note. This home, as interesting and arguably more beautiful than Mount Vernon, receives just a mere fraction of the visitors that Mount Vernon does – that home is Gunston Hall.
